Roan Oak – Cock Robin Point Trail

Trail Alert: This trail is currently very difficult to access due to the rough nature of Bottle Hill Road. The trail is easy to follow once you find it!

Directions to trailhead: From Auburn, take Hwy 49 south to Cool. Turn left at stoplight onto Hwy 193. At 12.2 miles, turn left onto Church Street in Georgetown (just before Main St. stop sign). At 0.5 mile, bear left onto Mamaluke Rd. Drive 1.5 miles and cross Canyon Creek Bridge after sharp right turn. Drive 0.2 mile and bear right at unsigned fork (see blue arrow on nearby tree). Drive 0.6 mile and take middle fork (marked with blue arrow). Drive 0.7 mile and turn right at the “T”. Trailhead is the unmarked dirt road on the left, at 0.3 mile, near an open field. Be sure to park well off of the road. Walk down the dirt road and turn right onto the obscure trail (unsigned) just before a creek crossing. This trail passes over private property. Stay on the trail and respect private property signs.

Difficulty: Very strenuous

Jurisdiction: Auburn State Recreation Area.

Trail description: Roan Oak trail was part of the Georgetown to Foresthill trail link. The Roan Oak mine adit is visible near the trailhead. The trail follows a shaded canyon to the confluence of M.Fk.Am.R. and Otter Creek at Ford’s Bar. From Ford’s Bar, one can cross Otter Creek (CARE! Creek crossing can be hazardous.) and continue steeply east up the obscure trail to Cock Robin Point.

Camping: Pleasant camping sites exist at Ford’s Bar.
