TRAIL ALERT: The Windy Point trailhead is now subject to a $10 daily parking fee.
20 miles from Auburn Courthouse. Moderate 4 miles, one way.
Awesome wildflower displays and river access to remote places along the N. F. American river await intrepid explorers willing to go that extra mile. This trail connects Yankee Jim’s road to Iowa Hill road using two well-established trails connected by a primitive trail.
Directions: Get yourself to Colfax (15 miles east of Auburn) and exit at Canyon way. Go .8 miles to turn L on Yankee Jim’s road. Follow this down and cross the river on the rickety bridge. The Indian creek trail starts from the upstream side at the confluence of Shirttail creek (dangerous crossing at high water!).
Or, from Colfax take Canyon way only .3 miles to turn L on Iowa Hill road. Take that 3 miles down to the river, cross and go up ¾ mile to the trailhead marked by a small post with rock. This is the popular Windy Point trail, well known for its marvelous show of poppies every spring. This trail has some very steep side cliffs so keep the kids on their leaches. The Iowa Hill road is daunting for some squeamish drivers, (narrow with scary cliffs), but check out the antique bar/post office/café in Iowa Hill after your hike. It’s worth the scary drive!
