(Robie Firebreak Trail)
1.3 miles from Auburn Courthouse. Mostly easy, with steeper options.
Just who was this Murphy character? If I find out I’ll let you know. His gate is a very popular trailhead right out of Auburn as you head out on highway 49 towards Cool. This trail, like Stagecoach, is a good introduction to the canyon on a relatively easy walk and is the place I often take visitors to give them a preview of the North Fork.
Directions: From the CH get on Lincoln and follow it R as it shares duty as highway 49 through Auburn. Follow past Elm where it goes R and go straight at the signal (Borland/Lincoln). A short half mile to find the parking lot on the right. The green gate #130 is the start.
The trail is actually an old road beyond the gate and serves as a firebreak between the canyon and the residential neighborhoods not far above. The road drops and climbs to cross a drainage then levels out nicely for the next couple of miles as it goes toward, to, and around Robie Point. You could take it all the way to Overlook park if you want—that’s about 3 miles from the gate. At .6 miles you find the Western States Trail (WST) coming up on your left. At .7 miles a side trail leads up to Robie street, staying left will take you around Robie towards the Auburn Dam site and other trails.
