Also accessible from Overlook Park is the Pioneer Express Trail which extends the WST to Sacramento, 55 miles away, by trail. It branches off the WST near its Overlook Park terminus and parallels the NID ditch until it reaches Cardiac trail or Cardiac Bypass to get down to the river near Oregon Bar. From there it follows the North Fork along Folsom Lake and the American River to Old Sacramento. I love this trail and wonder why it isn’t more used by walkers, as it’s mostly easy, and very scenic along the river. No bikes allowed; and few horses really.
